The Fish Market

Last Sunday, I had the chance to visit the local fish market, and it was such a fun experience!

The boats come right into the wharf, and you can watch the fishermen unloading their catch. As soon as the fish are brought in, the women are there ready to sell them. There was so much activity going on, and I loved watching the whole process.

I was especially amazed by the variety of seafood they had for sale. I’m used to the markets up in the north of Ghana, where most of the fish you see are dried tilapia caught in Lake Volta and sardines. So, seeing all of this fresh fish was quite a contrast!

And when I say fresh, I mean fresh. The fish had literally just come off the boats. And there was such a wonderful variety that we were sorry we couldn’t buy anything. Of course, we once again had to explain that, while we would love to take some home, we don’t actually have a kitchen on the ship in which to cook it!

It was such a simple outing, but I really enjoyed getting to see a little piece of everyday life here and another reminder of how different – and fascinating – life can be just a little farther down the coast.
